join our Salem District Structure & Bridge Section team! As an
Engineer Senior Structure & Bridge, you will serve as
responsible-charge engineer in the evaluation, designing, checking,
and drafting of complex bridges and ancillary structures for new
construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects. Please
note: This position is offering a $3,000 sign-on bonus and $1,500
employee referral bonus. Employee referral requires that the

responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
Design, Analyze, & Check Structural Elements: Prepare preliminary
and final bridge and structure designs for new construction,
maintenance, and rehabilitation projects. Prepare bridge plans,
sketches, and structural drawings. Ensure plans meet AASHTO and
VDOT specifications. Investigate condition of existing structures.
Analyze structures for safe load carrying capacity and perform
structural calculations to ensure soundness and compliance of
structural elements. Project Management: Serve as project manager
for new bridge design and bridge rehabilitation projects. Ensure
effective development of bridge projects by coordinating design
activities with other sections, divisions, and consultants. Assist
in the development of scopes of work, develop and manage project
schedules, review proposals and manhours, assist with negotiations,
and coordinate activities for advertisement. Attend project
meetings. Project Team Participation: Lead or participate project
teams as assigned. Ensure timely communications between project
team members and stakeholders. Review and resolve challenges to
enhance team performance. Technical Guidance & Support: Provide
technical guidance and support related to bridge construction
activities, issues, and problems. Develop effective and economical
recommendations to respond to construction problems and other

Qualifications • Experience applying civil engineering principles
and practices related to structural engineering to include strength
of materials, statics, and structural analysis • Experience in
structural steel design, reinformed and prestressed concrete design
and soil mechanics • Knowledge of specifications, codes and
regulations related to structural design (e.g. AASHTO and LRFD
structural design standards) • Skill in the use of computers and
software applications to include automated engineering and design
software • Ability to manage projects and review and administer
consultant design contracts • Ability to communicate effectively
orally and in writing with internal and external customers •
Ability to estimate quantities and cost of materials • Ability to
produce structural design plans and notes • Ability to interpret
construction plans and design specifications • Degree in Civil
Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field • Valid
Professional Engineer license • Valid driver’s license required
Additional Considerations • Experience in the structural analysis
and rating of existing bridges and sign/signal structures •
Experience in the bridge design using AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design
Specifications • Experience in bridge repair and rehabilitation •
Demonstrated ability to independently plan, coordinate, design,
review, or supervise the design of complex bridge structures and
manage consultant contracts • Strong project management skills and
familiarity with database management and/or macros. Special
