Overview:Full Time
$43,000 - $45,000 per year
This position will serve the New River Valley and Galax Districts.
The GoodStart and GoodCare Employment Specialist is responsible for providing coaching support for job placement and retention services, and career advancement services. The Employment Specialist will also monitor and document participant progress in the program, provide one-to-one coaching of participants, write progress reports, and perform other duties as required.Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the development of written career plans.
  • Contact employers to introduce and create partnerships with GoodStart and GoodCare. Work to establish relationships and maintain records of all those contacts.
  • Provide job placement upon completion of training.
  • Provide guidance and support for a period of time post program completion to assist with career advancement in the career pathway, to include but not limited to, additional college training and work based learning activities.
  • Design and implement an approach that allows for ongoing contact with participants in order to help them access needed academic, financial, and social supports.
  • Provide on-campus office hours for individual participant check-ins and regular meetings with groups or cohorts of participants.
  • Maintain confidentiality as it pertains to all participants.
  • Report to immediate supervisor and/or other appropriate personnel any condition which might jeopardize the health or safety of participants or the public.
  • Track and report participation and progress of each student receiving services
  • Attend meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
    • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested for successful completion of the mission of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys.Qualifications:
      • Experience, Competencies and EducationBachelor's degree required; degree in counseling or related field preferred. Preferred experience in counseling or training that includes vocational counseling, vocational testing/assessment, vocational referrals, employment services or career development/transition; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience in, and/or knowledge of, working with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities required. Must be able to work a flexible schedule. Excellent written, verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills required.
        • Language skillsAbility to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and course curriculum. Ability to effectively present learning in a classroom environment to various levels of employees including management. Ability to effectively present classes online.
          • Mathematical skillsBasic Skills: Ability to add, subtracts, multiply and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to adequately instruct functions in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
            • Reasoning abilityAbility to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
              • OtherBasic knowledge of computer use, basic record-keeping skills, good time management, classroom management, and excellent organizational skills. Excellent knowledge of instructional design theory, competency models, career pathways, and industry credentials. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with learners, staff, and management. Must be able to successfully complete State background investigation and drug screen.
                • Must have a valid state of Virginia driver's license, and be able to provide proof of insurance. Additionally, 3+ point DMV record required to drive company vehicle.AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES SPECIFICATIONS:
